Nature Detectives in the Field: Mineral Adventures in Nederland

Natural History - Families (Ages 6 & Up)

Join us for an outdoor family program designed for children 6 and older, though all ages are welcome. We will explore the fascinating world of mining history and geology in Nederland, beginning with a hike at Mud Lake. Families will take part in activities such as erosion control, building the Flatirons, and matching minerals with their commercial uses. After our outdoor exploration, we will head to the Nederland Mining Museum to learn more about the mining process and experience the thrill of gold panning. This program blends hands-on activities with history and science to foster a love for nature, geology, and local heritage in a fun, interactive setting.

Minimum Participants: 5
Maximum Participants: 15

This is my second season as the Nederland Mining Museum Coordinator. Last season was my first work experience in a museum. I enjoyed learning and performing the various aspects of interpretation for museum visitors and program participants. I especially benefitted in my rookie year from the expertise and guidance of various Parks and Open Space personnel and volunteers. I was born in New York City and raised in northern New Jersey in a family of seven with four sisters and two brothers.
