Natural History - All Ages Welcome

Have you ever wondered about the grasses that grow along Boulder’s trails? Join volunteer naturalists for a 1.5-mile hike — with 250 feet of elevation gain and loss — at Heil Valley Ranch to learn about early season grasses of the foothills. We’ll search for different species, discuss the vital role grasses play in healthy ecosystems, and explore wildfire impacts and management activities. Look closely, and you might develop a new appreciation for our beautiful — yet often overlooked — grasses.

Hi everybody! I am a Colorado Native but wasn't able to really start enjoying the outdoors until College at CU Boulder. There, my love for hiking, climbing, and other miscellaneous outdoor activities really prospered. Spending time in the outdoors is one of my favorite pastimes, but I especially love it when I am able to share it with others.

I greatly enjoy exploring Boulder’s trails with family and friends. Retired from the Nature Conservancy, I’m excited to share my love of plants and the natural world through the Volunteer Naturalist program!

I grew up on a farm in southwest Iowa. We grew corn, soybeans, oats and vegetables, and raised cattle, hogs, and chickens. Our meals were ‘farm to table’. My fondest memories were driving the tractor to load up bales of hay and playing in the creeks when the snow was melting after a long winter. I moved to Longmont from Omaha, NE where I lived in a forested area and enjoyed nature through the seasons. I enjoy time with my grandchildren, hiking, biking, walking my dog, and all things Colorado!

I’ve lived in Boulder since 1982 ... drawn to the beauty and wide open spaces of the Rocky Mountains. I am grateful for the abundance of open space in Boulder County and want to help others to enjoy it as much as I have over many years. I’m especially interested in sharing insights about the diverse Boulder county life zones and the big picture of the natural systems that sustain our open spaces.

I grew up on a farm, working the fields and managing livestock. In college, I was introduced to the Colorado mountains by my husband, and we spent many years camping, hiking, backpacking, and exploring Colorado with friends, neighbors, and family. He encouraged my love of birds, flowers, trees, and native edibles, and I learned that I shared his passion for geology and paleontology. I spent 35 years in engineering and management, including work for the NSF, and remain an avid naturalist.
