Hikes for Seniors: The Deep Sleep

Heil Valley Ranch Wapiti Trailhead  |  Registration Required

Natural History - Seniors

Follow us along the foothills of Boulder County as we explore and learn about the critters who live among the pines and rocks. Learn with volunteer naturalists how these animals prepare for winter's challenges and how hibernation is used as a survival strategy. Trails at Heil Valley Ranch have some inclines and rocky areas, but benches are available for sitting and resting. The trails can be slippery when wet; come prepared!

I’m a Boulder native with family roots in Mexico. I grew up spending summers on my grandfather’s farm in Chihuahua and was fortunate enough to be exposed to the natural resources of Colorado through school trips and summer camps as a teen. All of these experiences helped foster an appreciation and love for the outdoors in me. I love to hike, camp, fish and birdwatch, and most importantly, I like doing those things with people who haven’t or don’t do them often.

I grew up outside of Tucson, exploring the Sonoran Desert including Baja California (before there were roads there!), climbing in the mountains of southern Arizona, tracking birds and wild animals including black bear, javelina, mountain lions, even following rumors of the return of jaguars in the remote areas of the New Mexico "boot-heel." The plants, animals, geology, weather and cultures of these areas became a life-long fascination.

In our busy working lives so many people lose contact with nature and its healing ways. I hope to inspire people of all ages to experience nature in a healthy and therapeutic way, to reduce their anxiety and form a bond with the outdoor world, to gain strength by learning from nature.
