Limber pine is an ecologically valuable species that serves many functional roles in higher elevation ecosystems. Across its range, limber pine faces multiple threats, including mountain pine beetle, white pine blister rust, and dwarf mistletoe. The presence of these agents individually can lead to extensive tree mortality, but their combined impact can be even more devastating, posing a significant threat to the long-term sustainability of the species. One strategy to aid recovery is planting seedlings to get more limber pine on the landscape. Volunteers are needed to plant limber pine seedlings on one of our mountain properties. Directions Limber pine seedling planting will occur on a mountain property located about 7.0 miles north of Nederland. Parking will be at the large pull off area on the west side of Peak-to-Peak Hwy (Hwy 72) just north of the turn for County Road 116 (the left turn for Rainbow Lakes and the University of Colorado Mountain Research Station). Volunteer Project signage for the event will be placed on Peak-to-Peak Hwy in advance to the parking area. From Boulder: travel west up Highway 119 (Boulder Canyon) to Nederland. Turn west (2nd exit) at the roundabout in Nederland onto W 2nd S/West 72 toward Estes Park, then travel on Hwy 72 for 7.0 miles. Once you reach the left turn for County Road 116 for Rainbow Lakes and the University of Colorado Mountain Research Station, travel just past this turn staying on Hwy 72 and turn left into the large parking area on the west side of the road on the large curve. Notes: We will all meet together at the parking area at 9:00 AM on Saturday 10/3. From the parking area the planting area is a very short uphill hike. We will be standing and working on a moderate to steep slope in very uneven terrain for the duration of the three-hour project time. All planting activities will conclude at a respectful time to arrive back at our vehicles for departure at noon. Please bring along any food and water you may need, closed toe shoes or boots, and work gloves if you would prefer your own. We will have work gloves available for use and we will supply all the required planting tools, including a foam kneeling pad to kneel on while planting. PLEASE NOTE --Online waivers must be filled out prior to attending this project. A waiver is required for every person attending the project.
