Play Ball! Vintage Baseball Game & Autumn Heritage Day
10/05/2025

Walker Ranch Homestead
Cultural History - All Ages Welcome
Drop by anytime between noon and 3 p.m. to enjoy an old-fashioned vintage baseball game in the picturesque and historic setting of Walker Ranch Homestead. The Walker Ranchers, local recruits, will play a team from the Colorado Vintage Base Ball Association. The game will be played using 19th-century rules. “Base ball” was two words back then. Those watching the game are cranks, rooters, or bugs; players are ballists. A hurler pitches the ball to the behind, or catcher. No gloves or helmets are worn, and a cloth ball and cloth bases are used. Listen for the players’ nicknames and a bell ringing as players reach home plate. Also as you wander through the picturesque landscape of Walker Ranch Homestead, you'll encounter friendly costumed volunteers who bring the European settler history of the ranch to life. Engage in conversations with these knowledgeable guides as they demonstrate the daily tasks and traditions of the era. You will have the opportunity to roll up your sleeves and actively participate! Forge a deeper connection to the past through hands-on learning as you engage in activities that were once an integral part of ranch life. And for the young and young-at-heart, immerse yourselves in the joy of playing historical games, an entertaining way to experience the past together. Bring your own lawn chairs and blankets for seating to watch the game. No food will be available on-site, so please bring a picnic and drinking water for your household. Our next event will be Winter Heritage Day, Jan. 25 1 p.m.-3 p.m.

Boulder has been home for over 20 years. I live in the mountains near Walker Ranch, where I also volunteer. Originally from NY, I ran a creative writing school there, but moved here because of my love of nature and mountain air. Learning about the natural world, history, and about healing modalities for people and earth have always been passions. I also write, am a mom, practice yoga and other energy work, and play harmonium. I love sharing info and connecting people with the awe of nature.

Hello my BCPOS friends. Currently I'm Preservation Chair of Historic Boulder, Inc. & a volunteer fireman for the Four Mile Fire Department. I'm interested in the Switzerland Trail, hard rock mining and the history of Boulder County .

I’m a Colorado native; I grew up in Golden and moved to Greeley to attend UNC. I earned my undergraduate and MA degrees in history. That led me to museums, where I’ve worked for over 20 years. As of December of 2010 I’m excited to have Boulder County Parks and Open Space as my workplace. There’s fun, constant learning, and variety in being the Cultural History Program Coordinator; I get to work with amazing and talented colleagues and volunteers as we share the history of the area.

Having grown up in Boulder, much of my youth was spent recreating on the many trails and acres of open space that characterize our community. I then left the Rockies for the Green Mountains to study Sociology and Parks and Recreation at the University of Vermont, and worked in outdoor recreation, community mental health, and biodynamic farming. Upon returning to Colorado, I've worked in natural resources at the city, county, and federal level, and I'm so happy to be back working at BCPOS again!
