Cultural History - Adults (18 & older)

On Oct. 21, Boulder County Parks & Open Space staff and Parks & Open Space Advisory Committee (POSAC) members will participate in a guided site visit to Las Barracas, a historic agricultural labor camp on the Golden Farm property near Longmont. The site visit will highlight the layered agricultural and community history of Las Barracas. Participants will learn about the Japanese American Tanaka family, who operated the farm and relocated former military barracks to the property for worker housing, as well as the Mexican and Mexican American families who lived and worked there. The tour will also discuss ongoing community-engaged research and Boulder County’s efforts to document, preserve, and interpret the site. Attendees will meet at the Boulder County Parks & Open Space office, 5201 St. Vrain Road, Longmont, at 3 p.m. Vans will depart at approximately 3:10 p.m. and return to the Parks & Open Space office by 5 p.m. Participants should bring drinking water and wear comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes, and clothing appropriate for the weather. The site includes uneven terrain, and participants should be prepared for outdoor conditions. Members of the public wishing to accompany committee members on the site visit need to register as space is limited. This site visit will not provide an opportunity for formal public comment. The tour is informational only, and POSAC will not vote on matters related to this item. For additional information about the site visit, please contact Elisabeth Ríos-Brooks, Cultural Resource Program Coordinator, at [email protected] or 720-636-0768.
