Natural History - All Ages Welcome

World Migratory Bird Day is officially celebrated on the second Saturday of May in Canada and the U.S., and the second Saturday of October in Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. This year, World Migratory Bird Day highlights birds from around the world to celebrate the 2026 theme: “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter!” Learn how these species contribute to our understanding of migratory patterns and connect with communities across the globe. Join us on Saturday, May 16, at Walden Ponds Wildlife Habitat for a fun-filled day celebrating the incredible journeys of migratory birds and learning how we can all make a difference for bird conservation. Event Highlights: Special ceremony recognizing Boulder as an official Bird City by the Bird City Network. Live bird-of-prey showcase. Guided bird walks (available in English and Spanish). Bird identification games & hands-on activities for all ages. Educational stations hosted by amazing organizations like the Butterfly Pavilion, Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, Boulder Audubon Society, Harlequin’s Gardens, and the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation.

I’m a Boulder native with family roots in Mexico. I grew up spending summers on my grandfather’s farm in Chihuahua and was fortunate enough to be exposed to the natural resources of Colorado through school trips and summer camps as a teen. All of these experiences helped foster an appreciation and love for the outdoors in me. I love to hike, camp, fish and birdwatch, and most importantly, I like doing those things with people who haven’t or don’t do them often.

My Dad instilled the love of nature in me since I was born. He would quiz us on geology, plants and animals as we went on road trips to National Parks and camping by lakes in Washington state. I carried those experiences into my adult life with my kids and when I retired I became more involved in citizen science and advocating for natural areas and completed the Oregon Master Naturalist program. When I moved to Colorado a few years ago BCOS was a natural fit for those endeavors.

I've always loved nature and the outdoors, I especially love hiking, birding, and backpacking. I'm on the Board of Directors of Colorado Field Ornithologists where I serve as treasurer. I have recently retired from my position as a Psychology and Neuroscience professor at the University of Colorado Denver and look forward to spending a lot more time outside and sharing my love of nature with others!
